Sons of Northern Darkness
As we are sending Kai off to Iceland and the Aldrei Fór Ég Suður-festival today (enjoy, buddie!), and I personally have always been a purveyor of fine Heavy Metal tunes, we’d like to draw your attention to this little beauty: the World’s northernmost metal festival, Eistnaflug.
Having first taken place in 2004, this is the Icelandic version of the infamous Wacken Open Air. 5000 metalheads gather in the small hamlet of Neskaupstaður on the fjord Norðfjörður on the eastern side of Iceland, thus more than doubling the population of the place. But, as the website says: “there has never been any trouble with the festival guests.”

The majority of the Icelandic metal, hardcore and punk acts will share the stage, amongst this year’s line-up are long-time veterans like Sólstafir, Minus and Klink, but also newcomers like Carpe Noctem and Momentum. As a special delight this year’s headliner is no one else than the mighty Napalm Death. Here they are, shredding it with “Greed Killing” from the 1996 “Diatribes”-recording.
Extremely unfortunate for me is the fact that the festival takes place on July 8 – 10 this year, when I’ll be already back in Dublin. Damn.
PS: In case you are wondering what the title of this post is about (and are not used to raise the horns regularly), this is a reminiscence and a nod to all those corpse-painted, leather- and spikes-clad hellraisers who still pose on mountains with their guitars not plugged in. Hail and Kill!!
